Star Wars: Clone Wars Premiere at Cathay
27 Aug 2008
Popcorn Gaming was one of the lucky few to be able to watch the Stars Wars : Clone Wars movie before the masses in Singapore. There was the usual fan fare like people dressing up as their favourite Stars Wars characters and lots of fans and old friends catching up. One can never get sick of seeing Jedis and Storm Troopers can you! It's been awhile since the last Star Wars movie isn't it?

The Cosplay was as usual eye catching and with the guys from Movie Mania there it was no big suprise at all. As with Star Was events through the years, long queues and people jousting to get a piece of the action are the norm. I would like to say I'm not an avid Star Wars fan but even I could feel the excitment and anticipation before the movie. So did the movie live up to it's hype? Well as a neutral I would say yes and no.

The movie has lots of grand action sequences and the action scenes were well, pretty intense. It was not just action but really good action scenes. I would have to say it was the most action-packed Star Wars movie of the series by a mile. The dialogue sadly though, was not so good. And the new Padawan Ahsoka Tano would make many a Star Wars fan cringe and not one would expect of a budding Jedi you would say.

So the main plot of the Storyline is the Jedi trying to rescue Jabba the Hutt's kidnapped son. Well, without even giving away any spoilers you don't have to be a rocket scientist to figure how that ends up. Overall I would say the movie was more of a kid's movie and some parts of it was actually quite fun and funny. But whatever the case, it was sad that the highlight of the day for me was the Cos Players and the fans enthusiasm before the movie.

In preparation for the expansion, we will be issuing a new content patch in the coming weeks. Much like the patch made available shortly before The Burning Crusade's release, this content patch is designed to bridge current game content with that of the expansion and will contain some exciting changes and additions.

We have outlined some of the larger features scheduled to release with the patch below:

New class spells and talents
Stormwind Harbor
Barbershops in capital cities
Zeppelin towers outside of Orgrimmar and Tirisfal Glades
Two brand-new Arenas featuring challenging new layouts, terrain hazards, and moving obstacles

As mentioned above, this is not a comprehensive list, just some of the major highlights. We'll post the full patch notes as soon as they're available. Regarding Inscription, please note that all Burning Crusade players will be able to select Inscription as one of their two professions and level up to a skill level of 375 with it. Video games not all bad, psychologists say

Playing video games improves manual dexterity among surgeons, making them faster and less likely to make mistakes, US researchers have said.

The findings were contained in a raft of research about how video games effect the people who play them, discussed Sunday at the Annual Convention of the American Psychological Association in Boston.

"The big picture is that there are several dimensions in which games have effects," including their content, how they are played, and how much, said psychologist Douglas Gentile of Iowa State University.

"This means that games are not 'good' or 'bad' but are powerful educational tools and have many effects we might not have expected they could."

Gentile presented several studies on video games including one involving 33 surgeons specializing in laparoscopy, the use of a thin lighted tube to inspect and treat various conditions in the pelvic and abdominal cavities.

Laparoscopic surgeons who played video games were 27 percent faster at advanced surgical procedures, and made 37 percent fewer errors, compared to their non-gaming colleagues, the study found.

Studies involving high school and college students confirmed previous findings about the social effects of playing violent video games, the Iowa State researchers said.

Students who played violent games were more hostile, less forgiving, and more apt to view violence as normal, than peers who played non-violent games.

But students who played "prosocial" games got into fewer fights at school and were more helpful to other students, the researchers reported.

Yet another study, at Fordham University, measured the effect of learning a new video game on problem-solving skills in middle-school-age children and found that "playing video games can improve cognitive and perceptual skills."

"Certain types of video games can have beneficial effects improving gamers' dexterity as well as their ability to problem-solve -- attributes that have proven useful not only to students but to surgeons," the researchers found.

Upcoming 'He-man' movie will be realistic
17 Aug 2008

By the power of Grayskull, how the heck do you turn a hero famous for a whimsical cartoon into a credible action hero? You first have to make him real, "Grayskull" screenwriter Justin Marks told MTV News.

"I grew up on the 'He-Man' cartoon and watched 'He-Man' six days a week. The notion that I think we most took from the cartoon are the characters, and trying to find a way that is true to them," he said of his planned adaptation, which is currently in development at Warner Brothers. "Now, at the same time, we had to come up with why that is the way it is. I mean you're talking about sword-and-sandal meets science fiction meets fantasy meets everything, and how does that all kind of blend into the same world? And so we had to come up with very specific rules that explained why Trapjaw looks the way he looks, and why Cyclops - who is awesome - looks the way he looks."

Call it the "Batman Begins-ification" of He-Man, the shift of tone that helped make "The Dark Knight" so wildly successful, and is now being copied in varying degrees with reinventions of characters as diverse as Robocop, James Bond, and Red Sonja.

It's an approach Marks is using on "Grayskull," as well, he said, to help explain some of the sillier aspects to the characters.

"The script is very true to the characters - we're not talking about putting nipples on the Trapjaw suit. But we had to come up with a reason again why Trapjaw would actually not just be something that's totally absurd, but why he would need those bionic parts added to him," Marks insisted. "Which gives a sort of sense of where [the movie] is going in some way."

Given a realistic base, Marks said he has more latitude in creating He-Man's world of Eternia - free to create an epic universe unlike "anything we've ever seen before on a visual level."
